SPRINGTIME PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS WITH SUIKERBOS FOTO

‘What started as a hobby quickly turned into a passion and in 2013, Suikerbos Photography was born’, says Tertia Ernst. ‘I have learned so much during the last eight years and have never stopped exploring. My passions in life are colour, people and nature which I incorporate into my work. In the beginning, I experimented with almost all the different fields in photography and I was a true Jack of all Trades which gave me a crucial foundation and an in-depth understanding of the industry and myself. These days my main focus is on couples, maternity-moments and newborn photography, whether it's in the studio or outdoors. Magoebaskloof is my ‘go-to’ destination because it has so much to offer to photographers. We are so spoiled with all the beautiful venues it has to offer, especially in Spring when the gardens come to life in a blaze of glory.

There are so many talented photographers in Tzaneen, each with their own unique style. I think clients come back to me because they appreciate the way I can make them feel comfortable in front of the lens. I have the ability to capture their authentic selves when they relax and just be themselves.

TERTIA’S TOP 5 TIPS TO CAPTURING SPRING

  1. Don’t stop until you find the most beautiful light. The best time of day is early morning or late afternoon when the light is at its softest and images just look more dreamy.

  2. Focus on one subject, be it a flower or person. Play with your camera’s aperture and see what happens to the background. A lower aperture provides an out-of-focus background and can make the subject stand out more vividly.

  3. Always try different angles. It’s always amazing to me how more interesting an image can turn out to be by just moving around…And DO bend those knees to go with a lower angle.

  4. In the mountains, I am always on the lookout for reflections which add something unique to your images. Look for water to reflect the beautiful scenery.

  5. Don’t forget to look up from your camera and take in the beauty. Breathe in the fresh air that Spring provides and just enjoy the privilege of making art!
