For years, travellers winding between Tzaneen and Magoebaskloof have stopped at Krabbefontein Coffee Farm for excellent coffee, freshly-made roosterkoek and a welcome pause at the old mill buildings. Now, that familiar flavour and hospitality are heading further north, with a brand-new Krabbefontein coffee shop opening in Phalaborwa.

Right alongside Toyota and attached to the Mica building, Krabbefontein Phalaborwa is expected to open at the end of August. While Krabbefontein coffee is already served at several partner venues, including Bistro Haenertsburg, Moi Café, Allesbeste Padstal and the Welness Centr in Marble Hall, the Phalaborwa branch marks an important new chapter for the brand.

“This is our first full Krabbefontein,” explains manager Rémi Anderson. “It is not just a little coffee franchise that has been added onto an existing restaurant. It is an actual Krabbefontein.”

The new shop will bring much of what people already love about the original Krabbefontein to Phalaborwa. The menu will include its well-known roosterkoek, salads and beverages, offering an easy breakfast, light lunch or quick stop for locals and visitors passing through town.

There will be a distinctly Phalaborwa character to the space, though. Where the original Krabbefontein is known for its retro charm and historic mill setting, the new coffee shop will have a more contemporary look and feel. Modern, compact and designed for convenience, it will seat approximately 22 people, while also placing a strong emphasis on takeaway coffee and snacks on the go.

This should make it an appealing stop for early-morning commuters, shoppers, businesspeople and travellers heading towards the Kruger National Park. Alongside the familiar coffee menu, the Phalaborwa branch will offer a wider choice of cold beverages, particularly welcome in the Lowveld heat, as well as a dessert and ice cream selection.

Although smaller than the original, the new coffee shop carries the same generous spirit that has made Krabbefontein a favourite in the mountains. It is a place built around good coffee, simple but delicious food choices and the pleasure of stopping for a while, even when the road ahead is calling.

For Phalaborwa, it promises a fresh new meeting place. For Krabbefontein, it is the beginning of an exciting journey beyond its mountain home.
