HABIBI MY LOVE.... A Feast of Turkish Flavours in Haenertsburg

A soft orange lantern-glow spills across the Habibi sign, drawing you in from the cool, fresh mountain air of Haenertsburg. Step inside, and the shift is immediate.  From a spacious deck surrounded by large cherry blossom trees, the crisp white interior contrasts with the bright, traditional Turkish glass lanterns scattering a kaleidoscope of colour across the ceiling.  At the centre, a blazing fireplace radiates what feels like a warm welcome. What unfolds is an unexpected and enchanting dining experience in this charming Limpopo village en route to the Kruger National Park.

Amina, affectionately known as Amina Habibi and co-founder of the restaurant, explains that Habibi is a term of endearment in the Arabic language meaning my love, my dear, or beloved. “What has always been quite remarkable to witness,” she says, “is the change in demeanour when guests enter and start to play around with the term Habibi, the mere utterance of which evokes an instant sense of sweetness, softness and intimacy-setting the perfect tone for a culinary experience enveloped in love”

True to Turkish culture, guests are deeply valued, and Habibi’s vision is rooted in this spirit of hospitality. As Middle Eastern music plays in the background and the restaurant fills, Amina’s attention to detail becomes clear. Every element, from décor to menu, is intentionally curated to create a sensory experience of the best of Turkey and to ensure that  “every guest leaves as a ‘beloved’ friend filled with a sense of warmth.” Rumi quotes adorn the walls, small red Turkish hats line the counter, and beyond softly tinted glass, the open kitchen glows under copper lights, revealing the heart of Habibi: its food.

Habibi’s menu was conceptualised to showcase dishes most enjoyed and beloved in Turkish homes and restaurants across Istanbul. These iconic recipes have been adapted with utmost care to suit the South African palate that’s big on flavour - the perfect marriage of both worlds. One guest described the experience as “a beautiful nostalgic experience… As someone who loves Turkey and all its culture and food, this lovely restaurant brought back all our Istanbul memories.  The portions are generous and the taste is authentically Turkish.”

We shared a mezze platter of fried halloumi, crudités, hummus, olives, feta, tzatziki and other dips, alongside a signature pide - a boat-shaped flatbread filled generously and topped with cheese. For meat lovers, there are richly spiced lamb and beef shawarmas, slow-roasted doner kebabs, köfte meatballs and shish kebabs, served individually or as sharing platters with pillowy soft breads. An array of exciting drinks awaits you from Turkish sodas like Gazoz, Ayran, teas, turmeric lattes, and excellent coffee too. Save space for the baklava!

Whether you settle in for a slow, indulgent meal or a relaxed family feast, Habibi offers a space that feels both vibrant and intimate. The fire and flavours of Istanbul make it a sophisticated refuge, a little Turkish warmth tucked into the mountains, and one well worth seeking out on your travels.   And if this restaurant truly steals your heart, take a piece of it home by purchasing one of the Turkish lights for sale there.
