AUTUMN'S FINEST: A COLOURFUL JOURNEY THROUGH SEQUOIA GARDEN RETREAT

Updated: May 27, 2023

Autumn is a magical time of year. There's no better place to experience the beauty of the Autumn season than in the spectacular Magoebaskloof. One such space that is particularly stunning during autumn is Sequoia Garden Retreat situated on the Cheerio Road. This garden is renowned for its bespoke cottages, beautiful fall foliage, forest strolls along sunlit streams, bracing fresh mountain air and a sensational backdrop for capturing those special moments.

Be prepared to be mesmerised as you arrive to pockets of mist dancing on a crisp dam surface reflecting the burnt orange branches of a swamp cypress being illuminated by the morning sun rays as you watch the black African ducks make ripples in the water after ascending into the deep blue winter skies above. As the leaves begin to change colour in late March, the arboretum comes alive with vibrant shades of cadmium yellow, crimson and copper hues. A collection of over 100 different types of tree names have been put up so visitors can identify the vast collection of indigenous and non-indigenous tree species that transform Sequoia into an autumn spectacle. Pre-booked day visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the marked trails, or bring a picnic basket, relaxing at the water’s edge while absorbing the rhythms of nature.

One of the highlights of the autumn season at Sequoia is the colourful Liquid Amber Avenue as well as the vast collection of tree species including the blood -red Japanese Maples, Copper Beeches, Chinese Maples and golden Tulips. Head up to the farm's Labyrinth which surrounds a Beech tree transforming into copper hues where you are encouraged to keep the silence and walk in peace with your inner soul. The garden offers visitors a unique and unforgettable experience with an up-close and personal view of the natural beauty of the season.

Indulge in luxury in the lap of nature by booking a romantic stay in either of the two well appointed self-catering stone cottages situated amongst the auburn splendour of the gardens. Each cottage offers a spectacular setting for a relaxing getaway from the bustling city life. When dawn breaks, you may be woken by the cries of the fish eagles and the calls of the aquatic bird life. No need to hurry though, just lie there with a fresh cup of chai and breathe in the crisp mountain air. Enjoy the many activities in the area during your lazy day and later, when the mood moves you, stoke a crackling fire, look up and revel in the masterpiece of the star-studded skies while enveloping yourself in the tranquil sounds of nature's nocturnal opera.

Autumn is a time of transition and beauty. Watch as nature paints a season of colours with each stroke. It's a time to enjoy the coolness of the weather, the beauty of nature, and the company of loved ones. Whether you're out taking a walk or simply enjoying a glass of red wine on a crisp autumn evening while tucked up in one of our cottages and enjoying the warmth of a sizzling fire, Autumn is a season to be savoured and enjoyed on the mountain - and there’s no better place for this than at Sequoia Garden Retreat.
