THE BOSCOBEL ROSE

Neville and Margie Pirie purchased Boscobel Farm in the mountains of Magoebaskloof in November 2010, moving from their Letsitele home and beautiful lush garden which she created with help and inspiration from her mom and mother-in-law, propagating bougainvillea, cycads and expanding the garden with strelitzias, roses and other blooms of different heights and colours as well as planting an imposing avenue of Royal Palms from the dam towards the house.

When they relocated, the garden at Boscobel Cottages was already well-developed by the previous owners and avid gardeners, Mike Brawn and Alex Benjamin, so Margie had a great palette from which to work and enjoyed drawing a proper sketch of the garden beds to see how to keep improving the floral display. There was great excitement in 2015 when a friend discovered the distinctive pink Boscobel Rose when visiting David Austin’s nursery in the UK and was inspired to stop over at Ludwig’s Roses on the way to Limpopo, buying 4 of these special roses for Margie, soon followed by 14 more. Margie decided to take out the fountain amidst the lawns to create a showy circle of beautiful blooms at the entrance to the stone and thatch main building at Boscobel Cottages. Margie continues to improve this popular self-catering accommodation and has great plans to add a plunge pool in the garden as well as a fire pit under the spreading Umber tree outside the kitchen.
