BLUEBERRY HEIGHTS: A berry good time!

Updated: Mar 1

Turning onto a tree-lined farm road from the busy R71, in an instant your jaw unclenches and as you take a deep breath of the glorious fresh air it feels like you can forget about the real world out there. The road meanders down past rows of blueberry bushes, inviting you to slow down and take in the serenity of the surroundings. As you approach the whitewashed café with fresh herbs growing in front of the big blue barn door, a scenic vista of Stanford Lake emerges beyond the wooden deck. This is Blueberry Café, a vibrant combination of delicious food, warm hospitality and, of course, blueberries!

The farm, Blueberry Heights produces some of South Africa’s finest organic blueberries and golden kiwis and Magoebaskloof is one of those remarkable places which has divine treats ripe for the picking, literally. In season, from the second week of December until mid-February, visitors can stroll through the rows of blueberry bushes and gather handfuls of ripe berries for a purple feast.  In February, this divine little fruit is also celebrated at the annual Berry Festival and farm trail run on three possible routes with lovely views of lakes, waterfalls and forests!

Heather Gore, the dynamic manageress of Blueberry Café, is at the heart of its success. Her vivacious personality and hands-on approach creates a welcoming environment where every guest feels like family. Heather and her attentive team, go above and beyond to make visitors feel special. Whether it is remembering a guest’s name or chatting about their last visit, the staff’s warmth and connection are remarkable. Dorcas and Vinolia remember the names of your kids or even your dogs!  This charming restaurant in the beautifully repurposed building is unpretentious but always has locals and visitors enjoying the laid-back atmosphere.

Heather’s energy and creativity shine through the café’s varied events and offerings. From whiskey tastings, sip ‘n paint events or rugby screenings with burgers and beer to sundowners and dinner on a Friday and Saturday night, the café buzzes with life. Heather’s philosophy of celebrating life is evident in every detail, from the fresh flowers on each table to life-affirming blackboard messages that greet guests at the entrance along with her own sparkly smile.

The menu at Blueberry Café is also a testament to Heather’s passion for hospitality. Popular dishes include freshly baked bagels with trout, avo and capers or pork medallions à la maison, and a delectable range of blueberry-inspired treats. The iconic blueberry pie or baked cheesecake with blueberry compote is a must-try. Sundays are also a special treat with a family-style buffet featuring traditional favourites like crumbed pork chops, melt-in-your-mouth beef tenderloin roast or herb-stuffed pork belly with crispy crackling and all the side dishes from creamed spinach to potato croquettes and other vegetarian options.

Beyond the farm-fresh dining experience, Blueberry Café offers unique attractions for visitors of all ages. Children love romping around the farm’s outdoor spaces, following sheep and lambs as they graze near the lake, followed by a kid-friendly giant milkshake. Slow-food lovers will enjoy the small shop in the café courtyard featuring local products like honey, shortbread, blueberry cordials and pork cuts from Mockford Farms.  Weekly fitness enthusiasts can join the signature 5km Farm Fun Run/Walk every Saturday morning, a scenic and pet-friendly route showcasing breathtaking views of Stanford Lake, Ebenezer Dam and nearby waterfalls.

One of the year’s highlights is the Blueberry Festival, scheduled for 1 and 2 February 2025. This vibrant event celebrates the region’s blueberry bounty with live music, fresh organic berry picking and an array of culinary treats. From blueberry ale and gin and tonic to the famous cheesecake, there is something for everyone and many come just for the trail run with routes ranging from a 1km fun walk to a 15km challenge.

Blueberry Café is more than just a restaurant; it is a destination that brings people together to share laughter, create memories, and savour the simple joys of life. Whether you visit for the food, the events, or the warm embrace of Heather and her team, you are sure to leave with a full heart and a satisfied palate.

Blueberry Heights Farm has a delightful pet-friendly bungalow overlooking the Ebenezer Dam.  Blueberry-picking from mid December to February is R60 per punnet and the Blueberry Festival will be held on 1 and 2 February 2025 (Book through Quicket)
